SOCIAL JUSTICE MONTH
Social Justice Month is usually 3 weeks in March focusing on different aspects of justice. It's a time when the Newman Center takes a time out to examine how we affect the world and how we can bring awareness to and aid our brothers and sisters around the globe and in our own neighborhoods. It is a unique opportunity for us to learn from those we serve.
Past Causes for weeks that students have chosen were:
- Homelessness Awareness Week: With a ShantyTown and SoupLines in the Nosh
- Hunger Awareness Week: Hunger Banquet
- Capital Punishment Awareness Week
- Fair Trade Awareness Week
- Environment Awareness Week
- Climate Change Warnings
- Prison Ministry

Dr. Benson on Farm Workers
Dr. Benson is an Assistant Professor at Washington University in Sociocultural Anthropology. He will explain how agriculture fits into the globalized world, as well as how the shifting management of markets, labor, and health impacts farm workplace conditions and influences the social, moral, and emotional lives of differently positioned farmers and farmworkers. His field research in Guatemala and the United States should make this an excellent talk.
All In for Farmers!
Play a friendly game of Texas Hold 'Em for a suggested donation of only $10. All money raised will go to local, national, and international poverty-fighting organizations.
Week Two (March 8-12): Hunger Awareness Week
Soup Lines
Purchase a bowl of soup and bread (donated by Chartwells) to help fight hunger. All proceeds donated to local, national, and international hunger-fighting organizations.
Hunger Banquet
Experience the unequal distribution of wealth in the world as you eat as the world eats. The banquet is an educational and thought-provoking experience that is well worth the hour and free food!
Week Three (March 15-19): Homelessness Awareness Week
ShantyTown
